On April 28, from 2 pm to 4 pm, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) will promote the first meeting of the international webinar series “Dialogues for the production of data on favelas and informal settlements”. Participation is free and open, broadcast by Digital IBGE.

With the theme “Experiences from Latin America,” the first webinar will bring together representatives from Latin American government institutions to discuss challenges, gaps and advances in the production of data on favelas, urban communities and informal settlements. The objective is to support the formulation of evidence-based public policies and the monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in addition to promoting the construction of a collaborative network aimed at developing joint strategies.

The initiative is part of the partnership between the IBGE and UN-Habitat to strengthen the production and management of disaggregated, territorialized and comparable urban data, especially in territories historically underrepresented in traditional statistical systems. To advance this objective, the series of webinars will promote technical and institutional dialogue, the exchange of experiences and the convergence of concepts, methods and standards between national and local institutions and international organizations.

“Producing more accurate and inclusive data on favelas and informal settlements is essential to guide effective public policies and ensure that no community is left behind. With only four years left to fulfill the 2030 Agenda, initiatives like this are essential to accelerate progress on Sustainable Development Goal 11, strengthen cooperation between countries and advance the construction of fairer and more sustainable cities,” says the executive director of UN-Habitat, Anacláudia Rossbach, speaker at the first meeting of the series.

According to the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, who will open the first meeting, "the commitment of the IBGE and UN-Habitat to the production of data that gives visibility, dignity and centrality to favelas and informal settlements in the development agenda is confirmed in the strengthening of international cooperation that allows the generation of public policies that are more appropriate for the construction of fairer and more sustainable cities."

The manager Favelas and Urban Communities of the IBGE Directorate of Geosciences, Letícia Giannella, highlights that the production of urban data is challenging and meets a growing demand from society around the world. “The IBGE is avant-garde in this task, but it still faces a series of challenges so that, in fact, no territory or anyone is left behind,” explains her.

Schedule - The first meeting will feature the executive director of UN-Habitat, Anacláudia Rossbach, an economist with more than 20 years of experience in housing, informal settlements and urban policies. The moderator will be Diego Aulestia, an economist at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) with an extensive background in politics and public management and head of the UN-Habitat's Human Settlements Unit.

Among the confirmed panelists are the IBGE researcher and co-chair of the United Nations Expert Group on the Integration of Statistical and Geospatial Information (UN EG-ISGI), Claudio Stenner; the expert from the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia (DANE), Carlos Alberto Durán Gil; and the technical responsible for the National Register of Popular Neighborhoods in Argentina (Renabap), Juan Manuel D’Attolli.

“Holding this series of dialogues generates great expectations, as it will allow the exchange of experiences and the articulation of initiatives from the Global South to strengthen data on favelas and urban communities at different scales,” adds the IBGE researcher, Letícia Giannella.

In addition to the inaugural meeting, the series will feature the webinars “Experiences from Africa and Asia,” on May 26, and “Experiences from local planning institutes,” on June 23, both from 2 pm to 4 pm. The meetings will continue the international dialogue, expanding the exchange of experiences on the production and use of data on favelas and informal settlements in different contexts and scales.
