IBGE celebrates 90 years with event at Itamaraty and launch of unprecedented publications

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) will kick off its 90th anniversary celebrations with a special event in Brasília on May 4, 2026. The ceremony, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will mark the launch of the publications “Brazil in Figures – 2025” and “IBGE Around the World,” bringing together authorities, experts, and guests at the Itamaraty Palace.
This initiative inaugurates the commemorative calendar for the Institute's nine decades, with the release of the first special publications highlighting both national statistical production and IBGE's international activities.
The publication “IBGE Around the World,” launched in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, presents an overview of the Institute's main international actions in 2025, expanding access to information and strengthening cooperation with partner countries.
“Brazil in Figures – 2025,” in its 33rd edition, provides a comprehensive portrait of the country's social, demographic, and economic data. For the first time, the articles were written by experts from the IBGE itself, and the illustrations are based on the institution's collection.
During the announcement, the president of the IBGE, Márcio Pochmann, highlighted the decentralized and strategic nature of the institution: “The IBGE is a national institution, present in more than 560 agencies distributed across 27 superintendencies. The 90th anniversary celebration should take place in all places where the IBGE has a physical presence. This event, held in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reinforces a fundamental aspect of our work: in addition to its national activities, the IBGE also projects itself internationally through cooperation and technical exchange. At this moment, we seek to demonstrate to Brazilian society the breadth of this role.”
The event will be held at the Itamaraty Palace, and to participate in person, registration is required through the IBGE Store by April 29, 2026.
