CNEFE - National Address File for Statistical Purposes

About - Route of Enumerators of the 2022 Population Census

The Population Census is the main source of reference for understanding the living conditions of the population in all Brazilian municipalities and in their internal territorial divisions. It provides valuable support to the country's public administration and social and economic planning by means of results in different formats.

By releasing the routes of enumerators in charge of data collection in the entire rural area of Brazil in the 2022 Population Census, as done in the 2017 Census of Agriculture, the IBGE makes available the vector files that contain the routes covered by these agents, including streets, roads, rural tracks, among others, based on coordinates captured by means of mobile devices equipped with GPS. These data, presented as KML files readable by Geographic Information Systems - SIGs and applications such as Google Earth, provide an overview of the territorial reach of the census operation and of the significant operational efforts for the conduction of the survey and represent a potentially useful input in other technical works, mainly in rural and remote areas that face scarcity of recent vector mapping at large scale.

Internally, the routes made available can support new rounds of activities by IBGE agents, both in terms of previous planning as in the phase of data collection and add to the update of cartographic programs, among other applications; externally, it can guide field works developed by governmental agencies, companies and civil society agents that demand information for the analysis or guidance of possible routes to be covered in the territory.

The methodological notes attached to the publication explain the concepts and definitions adopted in the investigation and summarize the general procedures for the collection and treatment of data in the 2022 Population Census and present the figures resulting for its analysis, besides presenting other technical considerations.

Description

The National Address File for Statistical Purposes (CNEFE) is a nationwide database developed in 2005. This file comprises geo-referenced addresses of households and establishments in the entire country.
It is continually updated. As a whole, at each Population Census, and punctually, according to the demands from the File itself or from other IBGE surveys. The Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD) and the Consumer Expenditure Survey (POF) are among those surveys.

In the CNEFE activity, addresses distributed along the entire Brazilian territory are registered both in the urban areas and in the rural ones. In these areas, the IBGE updates addresses located in regular and consolidated areas, as well as in areas of urban sprawl and of difficult access, where the registration of addresses tends to be fragile and not formalized. In addition to the data that locate the addresses in Brazil, the work consists of characterizing them according to their type, i.e., into different categories of households or establishments and according to the type of building they correspond, among other aspects.

In terms of dissemination, the CNEFE data follow the IBGE guidelines to assure the confidentiality of the statistical information. Therefore, elements that might identify informants or characterize households according to their occupation status are not released.
