Survey of Medical-Sanitary Assistance

About - 2009

The Survey of Medical-Sanitary Assistance - AMS investigates all the health establishments that provide individual or collective health assistance services, either public or private, either profit or non-profit, with ambulatory or hospitalization services, including those that exclusively carry out support services to diagnosis and therapy and regular control of zoonosis, with the main objective of revealing the profile of the installed capacity and of the supply of health services in Brazil.

In this publication, the IBGE brings the results of the AMS carried out in 2009, including the number of existing establishments, by administrative level, operation status, category and type of service; services rendered by type of funding agent (SUS, private and covenant); employed persons; existing beds and hospitalization volume in establishments with hospitalization; as well as information on medical-hospital equipment in conditions to be used in the establishments investigated, according to the Major Regions, Federation Units and Municipalities of the Capitals. Backward series are presented for some variables, allowing to know the evolution of those statistics along the period from 1976 – beginning of the survey under the responsibility of the IBGE – up to 2009, its most recent edition.

The publication also includes technical notes on the survey, highlighting the major interregional differences noticed in the distribution of the selected indicators, illustrated with tables, graphs and maps, and a glossary with the relevant concepts to understand the results. This information is also available in the enclosed CD-ROM and in the IBGE portal, where the microdata of the survey can be found to streamline the exploration of its database according to a number of perspectives.

The Survey of Medical-Sanitary Assistance is supported by the Ministry of Health. Its results contribute to pinpoint the regional demands of public investments in the sector and, together with other indicators, subsidize the implementation of multiple programs to cater for specific needs on behalf of a more comprehensive access of the population to the health services in Brazil.

Description

The survey of medical-sanitary assistance investigates all the health institutions in the country which provide individual or collective health assistance services, profit or non-profit, at public or private institutions with ambulatory or hospitalization services. The study includes those which perform exclusively services of support to diagnosis and therapy and regular control of zoonosis, with the main objective of revealing the profile of installed capacity and of the supply of health services in Brazil.

With this publication, IBGE brings to the public the results obtained by the survey in 2009, encompassing aspects such as the number of establishments, by administrative level, functioning status, category and type of service offered; services rendered by type of financing agent (SUS, private and insurance); employed persons; existing beds and volume of hospitalization in establishments with hospitalization services; besides information about medical equipment in conditions to be used in the establishments investigated, by Major Region, Federative Units and Capitals. Some variables contain retrospective series that show the evolution of these statistics from 1976 – date of the first results under the responsibility of IBGE – to 2009, in the latest edition of this survey.

The publication also brings technical notes about the survey, an analysis which encompasses the main inter-regional differences observed in the indicators selected, illustrated with tables, graphs and maps, and a glossary with the concepts considered relevant to the understanding of the results. These data are available on the CD-ROM that comes enclosed with the publication and on the IBGE web site, where can also be found the survey microdata, what facilitates the exploration of its database from different approaches. The conduction of the Survey of Medical-Sanitary Assistance has the support of the Ministry of health. Its results contribute to the identification of regional demands by public investments in the sector and, together with other indicators, have made it possible to implement a diversity of programs in order to supply specific needs aimed at offering better access of the population to health services in the Country.
