Road and Waterway Links | 2016

Description

The Road and Waterway Links survey analyses the flows of the intercity passenger transportation system in Brazil. It seeks to measure the territory segments that are well connected by the offer of passenger transportation between cities, to specify the most accessible and central Brazilian urban centers, as well as to detect the regions that are characterized by isolation, whose cities are relatively further and harder to reach by means of intercity passenger transportation systems.

The information collected by the survey aims at registering the connection between cities, the appeal of urban centers for consumption of goods and services and the long-distance connectivity of Brazilian cities, creating an integrated database of the many modes of road and waterway transportation, with national coverage.

About the publication - 2016

The 2016 Road and Waterway Links survey collected 65, 638 connections between urban agglomerates (municipal headquarters or Population Arrangements) by means of a primary survey in all Brazilian municipalities, in which the IBGE Agency Network administered questionnaires at bus and ferry terminals and alternative/informal intercity transportation stops.

The collected data allowed to identify the accessible cities from an origin, qualifying the links by the numbers of vehicle departures (frequency), type of vehicle, travel time and price.

The publication includes technical notes, with operational procedures adopted in the survey planning, among other methodological considerations, and analysis about the national and international intercity public transportation links, illustrated with maps and tables.

What are links?
In the context of the 2016 Road and Waterway Links survey, links are connections between two urban agglomerations (municipalities, population arrangements or urban concentrations) made with one or more public transportation sections (for example, a part of an over-the-bus itinerary). Only transportation connecting municipalities’ headquartes with those with integrated fare for the stretch was considered.

The link data are represented as a pair of localities. For example: municipality A and municipality B, regardeless the starting point. The information about the transportation schedule, fare price and travel time are related to the pair of municipalities, never to the municipality apart.

Why do the travel time and the fare price of the connection between cities from the 2016 Road and Waterway link survey do not comply with the bus line information I have?
In general,  there are many sections of public transportation between municipalities. For this reason, the information about connections travel time and fare price were parameterized. For better data tabulation, the minimum cost and time between all surveyed connections were considered.

Does the 2016 Road and Waterway Links survey cover the country’s roadways?
No. The 2016 Road and the Waterway Links survey only covers information related to the public passenger transportation between cities, analyzing parameters like travel time, fare price and the transportation schedule between the municipalities.
