The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) presented, this Wednesday (January 21), another stage of the 2026 Work Plan, covering the areas of educational activities, training, education and qualification of the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE). The event took place at the IBGE Ecological Reserve, in Brasília (DF), and was attended by the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann; the general coordinator of ENCE, Jorge Abrahão; Marcelo Nunes, deputy IBGE state superintendent in the Federal District; Luis Fernando Vitagliano, from the IBGE Presidency advisory team; and the general coordinator of the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI), José Daniel Castro, who conducted the event.
Pochmann highlighted the IBGE´s commitment to society and the importance of releasing this year's Work Plan. “This effort concerns the republican, transparent, democratic commitment to presenting society with the results of what it pays in the form of taxes. We are very committed to doing the best we can with the resources we have, to better apply them, with a return to society. This is the objective for which we have worked for virtually a year: to identify what the IBGE should do in 2026 based on the approved budget,” said him.
The president also commented on the dissemination of surveys: “The commitment we are presenting is, this year, to make more than 269 releases. There is no institution in the world that releases as much as the IBGE. It’s almost one release per day, and this set of information is subject to planning.”

The work plan was created to communicate activities both within the IBGE and outside, to society, through a document. “It is an instrument for planning and organizational learning, for understanding what we have done, what progress we have made, what we need to adjust. This internal process is very important for adjusting routes and reallocating resources to where they are most needed. The work plan will not only be read by the IBGE employees, but also by the government, society and university researchers. We have been talking, within the working group, about the need to have a simple and accessible language for the population," explained Luís Fernando Vitagliano.
Addressing ENCE's 2026 work plan, general coordinator Jorge Abrahão highlighted the relevant role of the statistics school, which has 400 students: “We are committed to realizing that we have a history and we need to strengthen academic training, with graduation, specialization, master's, doctorate and post-doctorate.”
According to Abrahão, part of the planning is to consolidate ENCE in the research area. “Although IBGE is the largest Brazilian survey institute, it is important that we have academic research focused on beyond the surveys already carried out by the IBGE. Last year, the Technical Experimental Survey Laboratory was created, which tends to structure a catalog of experimental surveys around the IBGE. We are going to take surveys that are in their infancy or that are interesting possibilities and we are going to encourage them from the laboratory, looking for interlocutors and resources to finance them,” explained him.

In addition to the annual work plan, ENCE's general coordinator also highlighted the work for the coming years. “Every 4 years, ENCE puts together an institutional development plan (PDI). We are now building the PDI for 2026 through 2030. This plan gives us an idea of where we are going, what strategy we are going to follow and what we are going to build for the next 4 years,” said him.
This Thursday (22), the Work Plan will be released in Curitiba (PR) for presentation of the planning by the Directorate of Information Technology (DTI).
On Tuesday (20), the Work Plan was presented in São Francisco do Conde (BA), with emphasis on the Executive Directorate (DE) and the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI).
The document with the 2026 Work Plan, now available on the IBGE portal, guides the organization's strategic actions in the year in which it turns 90, reinforcing its role in the production and dissemination of statistical and geographic information essential to Brazil, strengthening federative dialogue and bringing society closer together.
