Highlights
- In 2023, ten major industrial products and services accounted for 22.2% of the net sales revenue of industry. The first position was occupied by Crude petroleum oil (5.3%), followed by Iron ore and its concentrates (3.3%) and Diesel fuel (3.2%).
- The overall value of production of industry was R$6.0 trillion in 2023, whereas the net sales revenue hit R$4.9 trillion.
- Ten major industrial products and/or services accounted for 22.2% of the net sales revenue of industry, a lower percentage than in 2022 (23.0%).
- In 2023, five major activities corresponded to 54.5% of the net sales revenue of the industrial sector.
- Once again, manufacture of food products (18.6%) led the ranking of share in the net sales revenue of the Brazilian industry. It was followed by Manufacture of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (10.4%) and Manufacture of chemicals (9.9%).
- Between 2022 and 2023, products of the food sector were those that mostly gained share (1.2 p.p.) in the net sales revenue.
- The Southeast Region concentrated 55.2% of the net sales revenue in 2023, followed by the South (20.6%), Northeast (10.1%), Central-West (7.2%) and North (6.9%).
- In the last ten years, the concentration of the net sales revenue in the three major products increased in the Southeast (6.7 p.p.) and North (3.8 p.p.) regions.

According to the 2023 Annual Survey of Industry – Product (PIA Product), which investigated nearly 3.4 thousand products manufactured by 34.0 thousand industrial companies and their 40.9 thousand productive local units, the overall value of the Brazilian industrial production was nearly R$6.0 trillion in 2023, whereas net sales revenue was R$4.9 trillion. The data were released today (25) by the IBGE, coupled with the results of the Annual Survey of Industry – Enterprise (PIA Enterprise).
"Unlike PIA-Enterprise, whose information is focused on the data of the entire company, here the focus is on more than three thousand industrial products and services," explains Marcelo Miranda, IBGE´s Manager of Structural Analysis.
Ten major products accounted for 22.2% of the net sales revenue in 2023, a lower percentage than in 2022 (23.0%). For the second consecutive year, crude petroleum oil led the ranking of net sales revenue with a share of 5.3%, the same percentage as in 2022, with a revenue of R$263.0 billion.
"The industry of crude petroleum oil is one of the pillars of the national economy, having a strategic role both in the generation of revenue and as a supply of energy. Highlighted by the exploitation of the pre-salt layer, Brazil became one of the biggest world producers, with most of the output geared for exports. That productive chain moves a number of industrial sectors, like refining, petrochemistry and other activities, as well as represents one of the major sources of investment, jobs and technological innovation in Brazil," notes Miranda.
Iron ore (R$161.2 billion and a share of 3.3%) led the ranking in 2020 and 2021, and rose one position over the last year, standing in the second place in 2023, surpassing Diesel fuel (R$160.4 billion and a share of 3.2%). It was followed by Fresh or cooled beef (R$114.2 billion and a share of 2.3%), Motor gasoline (R$88.5 billion and 1.8%), NPK-based manure or fertilizers (R$80.3 billion and 1.6%), Cakes, bagasses, crumbs and other residues of soybean oil extraction (R$69.8 billion and 1.4%), Gasoline, ethanol or bi-fuel cars with engine displacement higher than 1,500 cm3 or lower than or equal to 3,000 cm3 (R$54.8 billion and 1.1%), Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) not denatured for fuel purposes (R$54.0 billion and 1.1%) and crude VHP sugar (R$51.4 billion and 1.0%).

Compared with 2022, the industrial activities that mostly gained share in the total sales were Manufacture of food products (1.2 percentage points); Manufacture of beverages (0.3 p.p.); Manufacture of electrical material and apparatus (0.3 p.p.). In contrast, Manufacture of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-1.5 p.p.); Manufacture of chemicals (-1.2 p.p.); and Basic metals (-0.6 p.p.) were the sectors that mostly lost share.
Participation of Southeast, South and northeast decreased in ten years, whereas North and Central-West gained
As the most industrialized region in Brazil, the Southeast (55.2%) remained with more than half of the total industrial revenue in 2023. That result is lower than that reported in 2014, when the region had a share of 56.8%. The Southeast also registered the biggest increase (6.7 p.p.) in the concentration of the net sales revenue on its three major products (Crude petroleum oil (9.3%), Diesel fuel (3.4%) and Iron ore (3.4%), which, together, accounted for 16.1% of the net sales revenue of the region in 2023.
It is possible to note that revenue was concentrated on the major industrial products and services in 2023, especially in the North and Central-West regions. The North contributed with 6.9% of the Brazilian net sales revenue, and the major products are based on the Extraction of metallic minerals, Manufacture of motorcycles and Production of beef. In the Central-West (7.2%), the highlights were the agro-industrial products: Fresh or cooled beef (12.6%); Cakes, bagasses and crumbs from the soybean oil extraction (8.5%); and NPK-based manure or fertilizers (5.8%), representing 26.9% of the sales in the region.
In the Northeast, which accounted for 10.1% of the Brazilian industrial revenue, the major products were Diesel fuel (4.9%) and Motor gasoline for other use, except for aviation (2.8%). The two products corresponded to 7.7% of the total revenue in the region.
In the South (20.6%), Diesel fuel (3.7%), Frozen poultry and giblets (2.9%) and NPK-based manure or fertilizers (2.3%), which hit 8.9% of the sales revenue in the region, stood out.
More about the survey
The Annual Survey of Industry - Product (PIA Product) investigates, on an annual basis, information related to products and services produced by the Brazilian industry, based on a predefined nomenclature: the List of Products of Industry (Prodlist-Industry), produced by the IBGE on top of the Mercosur Common Nomenclature (NCM) and the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE 2.0). Its results are a reference to the further study of the composition of the industrial production, as well as to the articulate analysis of the flows of the internal production and the foreign trade of industrial products.
