Fifteenth Seminar Brazil in Figures: reflections about the future of the Northeast

Isabela Torres highlights the importance of "Brazil in Figures"

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) organized, on Wednesday, 29, at the auditorium of Casa Brasil IBGE SUDENE, in Recife, the 15th Seminar Brazil in Figures, an event that gathered scholars and professionals to discuss topics about the Brazilian reality and the Northeast.

The Seminar started with a presentation by Isabela Torres, who spoke about the importance of "Brazil in Figures”, a bilingual publication that summarizes aspects of national reality. The book is the result of surveys conducted by the IBGE and the work of partner institutions, and presents articles written by professor and scholars engaged in each topic in the publication and illustrated with works from Brazilian museums. This edition shows works from Ricardo Brennand Institute, a cultural institution located in the capital of Pernambuco.

Nilson Cortez Crocia de Barros, from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) approached, in his talk, the topic population from the perspective of the Department of Geography. Maurício Oliveira de Andrade, from the same university, brought to light discussions about Transportation and its relevance to regional development.

In the afternoon, debates were held about prospects for the Northeast Region in 2025. José Farias Gomes, coordinator general of the studies and research, evaluation, technology and innovation at Sudene, presented opportunities and challenges for the Major Region in coming years. Professor Álvaro Barrantes, in turn, approached matters related to foreign trade and shared analyses about how commercial interactions can affect the economic growth of Brazil.

The 15th Seminar Brazil in Figures promoted academic discussions and reinforced the importance of cooperation between institutions aiming at the advance of knowledge. "Brazil in Figures" will be available online as an e-book and in a printed version, in Portuguese and in English.

With support from the Superintendency for the Development of Brazilian Northeast (Sudene), Banco do Nordeste and the Government of Pernambuco, the 15th Seminar Brazil in figures restated its commitment with the IBGE and with the dissemination of knowledge and of the results of surveys.
