The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) will give, on Tuesday, 8, at 10 am, a press conference about the Consumer Expenditure Survey (POF). The event, which will be held on the ground floor of Casa Brasil IBGE, located downtown Rio de Janeiro (RJ), is intended to present the biggest consumer expenditure survey in Brazil, scheduled to be in the field on November 5. Another objective is to explain how it will be organized and the importance of this survey to the country.
The press conference will be streamed live on Digital IBGE and on the Institute's social media channels. The Institute's Superintendencies will conduct live events in their respective states.
POF updates the list of consumer items used as a reference for the calculation of Brazil's official inflation index, the Extended national Consumer Price Index (IPCA). By means of detailed questionnaires, the IBGE finds out how much of a household budget is spent on clothing, medicines or bus tickets, for example. This edition of POF also includes an unprecedented module on time use by Brazilians.
“The IBGE will be starting the seventh edition on households' budgets and expenditure structure, the results of which, once disclosed in 2026, will contribute to the elaboration of public policies for the country. It is a major enterprise, the result of the undeniable commitment of IBGE civil servants with their institutional mission, and that was supported by extra budgetary resources supported by president Lula and minister Simone Tebet,” said Marcio Pochmann, president of the IBGE.
By means of this survey, the IBGE has investigated the consumer habits of the Brazilian population since the 1970's. It assesses the structures of consumption, expenditures, income and part of the asset variation of the households, providing a profile of the life conditions of the population based on the analysis of the household budgets. In addition to the information directly associated with the budget structure, a number of characteristics of the housing units and households are also investigated, including the subjective self-assessment on quality of life.
Leonardo Oliveira, manager of the survey, explains that POF 2024/2025 has the main objectives of portraying the budget and the quality of life of Brazilian households. “I like the idea that POF does the calculations of Brazilian's everyday expenditure.”
The event will also be attended by the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, the director of Surveys, Elizabeth Hypolito, the coordinator of Household Sample Surveys, Adriana Beringuy, and the manager of POF, Leonardo Santos de Oliveira, as well as of other technicians engaged in the planning, execution and monitoring of the survey.
