The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) hereby clarifies that it does not recognize as official the map shown on the SE TV 1st Edition news program, on TV Sergipe, an affiliate of TV Globo in the state of Sergipe, last Thursday (March 26th), which addresses the decision-making process regarding the territorial boundaries between the municipalities of Aracaju and São Cristóvão.
The aforementioned report used images containing the Institute's logo, the origin of which is neither recognized nor validated by the IBGE's technical areas in charge of defining territorial boundaries. The broadcast suggests a certain level of compromise by the IBGE in the process of accurately defining the boundary, by presenting a possible digital overlay of supposed municipal boundaries in an old publication. It should be noted that the IBGE does not publicly comment on disputes, considering that the competence to define territorial boundaries between disputed municipalities is a prerogative of the State.
The IBGE emphasizes that it has no record of producing municipal maps specifically highlighting areas of territorial conflict in the manner presented in the program and reaffirms its commitment to the quality, reliability, and official nature of the geospatial information it produces, and advises that any materials attributed to the Institute be previously verified through its official channels.
