The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) presented, this Tuesday (January 20), the 2026 Work Plan of the Executive Directorate (DE) and the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI/CCS), at an event held at the IBGE Branch in São Francisco do Conde (BA), based at the Casa de Mário Augusto Teixeira, one of the main creators and founders of the Institution.

The document, now available on the IBGE portal, guides the organization's strategic actions in the year in which it celebrates 90 years, reinforcing its role in the production and dissemination of essential statistical and geographic information for Brazil, strengthening federative dialogue and bringing society closer together.

During the opening of the celebrations, the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, highlighted that Brazil is experiencing a profound transition to a hyperconnected society, in which almost four-fifths of the employed population is in the tertiary sector. “This scenario poses enormous challenges in driving this transformation, in a context in which decisions are increasingly made based on data.”

Pochmann highlighted the IBGE´s republican and democratic responsibility when publicly presenting its work plan, informing that the institution will have R$4 billion available to carry out its activities — an increase of 32% compared to 2025 — resources that will allow for more than 270 publications planned for the year.

“Among the major operations that are part of the planning, we will have the Census of Agriculture, the Homeless Population Census and the Census of Brazilians Abroad,” pointed out the president about this year’s major operations.

He also reaffirmed the IBGE's ongoing concern with statistical secrecy and the sovereignty of national data in the Digital Era, highlighting the importance of ensuring that this information is not stored in foreign companies. “The Work Plan represents transparency, accountability and public commitment to Brazilian society,” said Pochmann.

The superintendent of the IBGE in Bahia, André Urpia, celebrated the choice of São Francisco do Conde to host the opening of the 2026 calendar, stating that the state welcomes the event with joy precisely in the year in which the Institute launches its new logo and celebrates nine decades of existence. “We thank the officers and managers who contributed to this story.”

Representing the Executive Directorate, advisor Hugo Leonnardo highlighted that the Work Plan rescues the historical trajectory of the IBGE at the same time in which it projects the next 90 years of the institution. “Planning is part of the Executive Directorate and involves significant efforts, especially in a year marked by complex operations such as the Census of Agriculture, which will feature budget reinforcement to improve the data collection structure.”

For 2026, he announced the refurbishment of the building on General Canabarro Street, scheduled for March, with early delivery and within the concept of a “sustainable IBGE”. Among the projects started in 2025 and which will continue in 2026, he mentioned the launch of the website “Management Follow-up", which will allow the internal public and society to transparently follow up the application of the IBGE´s resources.

The CDDI/CCS coordinator, José Daniel de Castro, recalled that the construction of the Work Plan is part of a process that began the previous year, with regional presentations, and highlighted the set of communication and institutional memory projects related to the celebrations of the IBGE's 90th anniversary.

The ceremony was attended by municipal authorities. The Secretary of Culture and Tourism, Luciana de Souza, highlighted the historical importance of Teixeira de Freitas for São Francisco do Conde, highlighting his symbolic relevance for the municipality. On the other hand, the director of the Estate Department, Maria Bernardete Primo, celebrated the revitalization of the space that hosted the event and stated that the property was always designed to become a museum, thanking the current management of the IBGE for understanding this intention. For her, Teixeira de Freitas represents a history that belongs to the local community and must be preserved and lived by the population.

Representing the Executive Branch, vice-mayor Marivaldo do Amaral emphasized the fundamental role played by Teixeira de Freitas in building Brazil's image and stated that the data produced by the IBGE continue to be essential for the formulation of public policies and the consolidation of Brazil.

The IBGE donated materials to the museum, which also houses a branch of the Institute, where students and residents of the region can visit and learn about the history of the fellow citizen.
The presentation of the 2026 Work Plan continues this Wednesday 21 at the IBGE Ecological Reserve, in Brasília (DF).
