The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reaffirmed its leadership role in the official international statistics by participating in the second Brazilian presidential mission in 2025, this time in Indonesia. The presence of the IBGE in the delegation led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva marks a new chapter in the bilateral cooperation between Brazil and Indonesia, with a focus on science, technology and statistics.

During the official visit, held between October 21 and 23, the President of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS), alongside Chief Statistician Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti. The event was attended by the presidents of both countries, reinforcing the strategic nature of the partnership.

The initiative is also aligned with the IBGE's role as president of the BRICS National Statistical Offices in 2025, expanding its role as a regional and global reference.

The IBGE has intensified its efforts both on the multilateral front, through joint initiatives with BRICS countries, and on the bilateral front, which allows for more specific and in-depth collaborations with partner institutions. The approach strengthens the IBGE´s international operations and expands opportunities for exchanging experiences and joint development in strategic areas of the official statistics.

"The international statistical and geoscientific diplomacy practiced more recently by the IBGE constitutes the strategic dimension of sovereignty in the production of data on the national reality, as well as its technical independence and necessary updating of global norms. It reaffirms Brazil in its renewed insertion in the global scenario of digital transformation, resulting from the combination of technical cooperation with multilateral representation and the defense of the national scientific autonomy," pointed out Marcio Pochmann, President of the IBGE.

The mission to Indonesia follows the official visit to China, held in September, when the IBGE was also part of the presidential delegation. On that occasion, the IBGE established dialogues with the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS) and with Chinese universities, aiming to expand technical and academic cooperation. The IBGE's participation in the mission to China was marked by strategic meetings that reinforced the Institute's role as an articulator of international statistical production networks.

Expanding its activities in the Global South, the IBGE also develops technical cooperation with Mozambique, which sent a delegation to Brazil for a technical visit to the Institute. The agenda included discussions on strategic planning and exchange of experiences aimed at carrying out the new Mozambican population census. The initiative is part of the joint effort of the IBGE and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in the development of the Reference Center for Electronic Data Collection, aimed at providing technical support to Portuguese, French and English-speaking countries. The cooperation reinforces the IBGE´s commitment to strengthening statistical capacity in developing countries.

With these initiatives, the IBGE reaffirms its role as a technical body of the Brazilian State, with the capacity to dialogue with different statistical cultures and contribute to the development of global solutions based on evidence. Strategic actions in multilateral and bilateral forums, such as the BRICS and the UN, consolidates the IBGE´s image as a protagonist in the production of reliable and essential official statistics for the formulation of public policies and the achievement of sustainable development objectives.
