Juvenal and Dalva have just met and have a lot to talk about. Want to know who they are and what they talk about? Then you need to download the PDF of the first title in the children's book series “Ciências – quem é você?” (Science – Who Are You?), which IBGEeduca has just launched.

The idea is to present an element of nature to children in each volume. The first in the series will be "Mineral".

Written by two IBGE civil servants, IBGEeduca journalist Agláia Tavares and geographer Therence de Sarti from the Environmental Department, "Mineral" brings geosciences closer to children by placing two characters who meet for the first time and started an unusual friendship on a plain.

Children's book author Agláia edited the narrative based on Therence's original idea, focusing on a text suitable for young readers. With simple and captivating language, Juvenal is the mineral that explains to Dalva, the capybara, its formation process, its transformation, and its entire cycle until its importance to human life.

According to Therence, the book "gives a general idea of the processes that occur in nature and shows the life cycle of the mineral." The coolest thing, in his view, is that the book "tells a story, has a narrative without saying that it is teaching something, but the sequence of events and the importance of the mineral in human life are there."

For the authors, reaching children is fundamental because they are at a proper age for learning at school, being more susceptible to being presented to new knowledge, in this case, related to the environment.

Luiza Freire, a designer from the IBGEeduca team, was responsible for the book's illustrations. She says that she looked into images of capybaras in rural and urban areas and even in the neighborhood where she lives, Jacarepaguá (RJ), to draw the character Dalva. She hopes children can "read and understand the illustrations which are more informative."

Marcos Balster, manager of educational affairs at IBGE, emphasizes that "Mineral" is another "brilliant initiatitve that enriches IBGE's tradition of publishing illustrated books aimed at kids and teens."

Available in digital format, the book was entirely produced by IBGE professionals, and brings multidisciplinary knowledge. Readers can download the volume at the IBGEeduca's Book Shelf, on the virtual shop or on the IBGE library website.
