On May 19-23, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) participated in the Regional Workshop on International Statistical Classifications, promoted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and held in Santiago, Chile. Francisco de Souza Marta, from the Division of Registers and Classifications of the IBGE´s Directorate of Surveys (COCAD/IBGE) represented the IBGE in the event, which aimed at training participants to deepen the understanding of the principles and methodology of the international statistical classifications.

The workshop discussed aspects related to the implementation of statistical classifications and conceptual challenges arisen in countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Recent revisions of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Rev. 5 and Central Product Classification (CPC) Ver. 3.0 were presented, as well as updates of other classifications, like the Classification of Expenditure according to Purpose and the Standard International Energy Product Classification (SIEC).

Francisco de Souza Marta pointed out that it is important to understand the evolution of the countries in the region in their development of national classifications, especially the ISIC, share success experiences and challenges to implement the classifications in different statistical operations at national level. "We are very interested in these discussions in Brazil, especially now that the IBGE is revising and updating the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE), including the structural and emerging changes of the Brazilian economy and aligning it with ISIC rev. 5."

the meeting also shared guidelines on strategies for the implementation of statistical classifications, approaching the challenges faced by countries in the region. It also aimed at developing tools to encourage the participation of countries to share experiences related to the classifications theme.

"Meetings like this are very important, as they help participants to acquire knowledge and skills to deepen their understanding on the principles and methodology of the classifications. Furthermore, they also introduce new developments, including visions for the modernization of classifications and statistical systems; and they encourage the participants to share their experiences in the development and implementation of the classifications, major challenges and successes faced by countries, as well as new developments in this thematic area," highlights Marta.
