On Monday (11/25), the IBGE released a new product: O x,y da questão” (the name is a pun with the x and y coordinates and a Portuguese expression equivalent to the English idiom "the heart of the matter”). The product is a data storytelling that is part of the IBGE Interactive Maps channel, presenting concepts such as “address” and “location” in a simple and didactic way, in addition to explaining the importance of these data for the integration of geography with statistics and how this can result in benefits for citizens.

Developed by the Coordination of Service and Information of the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI/COATI) with support from the National Address File for Statistical Purposes (CNEFE), “O x,y da questão” stands out for its simple language, which allows the citizen to associate the information provided with their daily lives and envision possibilities for using this data. The specific chapter on addresses in the 2022 Census is very relevant, with maps showing some of the results obtained.

Wolney Menezes, creator of the IBGE National Address File for Statistical Purposes – CNEFE, highlights that “in recent years, there has been a growing interest in more spatially detailed information, that is, with more precise location. Traditional disseminations by region, state or municipality, although still relevant, do not meet the needs of a society undergoing rapid transformation”. Mr. Wolney adds that “the use of addresses – the most popular form of location – and coordinates – the most precise and versatile form of location – has allowed the IBGE to contribute to meeting these demands”.

“O x,y da questão” is available on the IBGE Interactive Maps channel* and also on the institutional web site, on the page dedicated to CNEFE, in the left side menu Links.
