Volume of Services grows 1.4% in December and closes 2021 with a 10.9% high
In December 2021, the volume of services in Brazil grew 1.4% compared to November, in the seasonally adjusted series. As a result, the services sector widened the gap from pre-pandemic level, standing 6.6% above February 2020, and reaching its highest level since August 2015.
Compared to December 2020, the sector had its tenth consecutive positive rate: 10.4%. Year-to-date, the volume of services ended 2021 with an increase of 10.9% compared to the same period in the previous year, a record in the time series started in 2012. The cumulative volume in the last twelve months went from 9.5% in November to 10 .9% in December 2021, maintaining an upward trend since February 2021 (-8.6%).

The 1.4% increase in the volume of services from November to December 2021 was spread over four of the five activities surveyed, with a highlight to the gains of transportation (1.8%) and professional, administrative and complementary services ( 2.6%), with both advancing for the second consecutive month.
The other expansions came from other services (1.4%) and services rendered to families (0.9%), with the former reducing the magnitude of growth compared to November (4.2%); and the later posting the ninth consecutive advance, period in which it accumulated a 61.6% expansion. The only negative rate in the month was that of information and communication services (-0.2%), which returned a small portion of the gain obtained in November (4.7%).
The quarterly moving average grew (0.8%) in the quarter ended in December 2021 against the previous month, after a slight positive change of 0.1% in November. Among the sectors, four of them followed the growth of the overall index: services rendered to families (1.8%), transportation (1.3%), information and communication services (0.7%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.3%). On the other hand, only other services (-0.5%) had a negative result in the quarter ended December 2021.

In comparison with December 2020, the volume of services increased by 10.4%, the tenth consecutive positive rate. All the five activities recorded increases and 69.3% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (14.9%) and information and communication services (9.9%) accounted for the main positive contributions on the total volume of services. The other advances came from professional, administrative and complementary services (7.5%) and services rendered to families (21.5%). On the other hand, the only negative rate came from the sector of other services (-4.4%).
In the cumulative index from January to December 2021, over the same period in the previous year, the services sector increased 10.9%, with an expansion in the five activities and in 74.1% of the 166 types of services surveyed. The most important positive contributions came from transportation, support services to transportation and mailing(15.1%) and information and communication (9.4%). The other advances were those of professional, administrative and complementary services (7.3%); services rendered to families (18.2%) and other services (5.0%).
Services grew in 19 of 27 Federation Units in December
Regionally, against November, there were increases in 19 of the 27 Federation Units, following the increase (1.4%) observed in Brazil. Among the places with positive rates, the most important impact came from São Paulo (1.5%), followed by the Federal District (9.3%) and Minas Gerais (2.3%). On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (-1.5%) recorded the biggest decrease.
Against December 2020, the advance of services in Brazil (10.4%) was registered in 24 of the 27 Federation Units. The major positive contribution came from São Paulo (13.1%), followed by Minas Gerais (11.1%), Federal District (21.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (13.3%) and Santa Catarina (13.1%). Conversely, Amazonas (-1.7%), Rondônia (-6.0%) and Piauí (-1.8%) had the only negative results of the month.
In the cumulative result for the year, the increase in the volume of services in Brazil (10.9%) occurred in the 27 Federation Units. The main positive impact was that of São Paulo (11.5%), followed by Minas Gerais (14.0%), Rio de Janeiro (7.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (12.1%) and Santa Catarina ( 14.7%).
Tourism activities grew 3.5% in December and 21.1% in 2021
In December 2021, the index of tourism activities grew 3.5% compared to the previous month, the seventh positive rate in the last eight months, a period in which it accumulated a gain of 66.7%. However, the tourism segment is still 11.4% below the level of February 2020. By area, eight of the 12 localities surveyed recorded increase. The most relevant positive contribution came from São Paulo (5.7%), followed by Paraná (6.0%), Federal District (7.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (4.0%). On the other hand, São Paulo (-1.7%) and Ceará (-5.2%) recorded the main negative results in the month.
