In August, retail sales change 0.2%

In August 2025, retail sales volume changed 0.2% compared to July, in the seasonally adjusted series, interrupting four consecutive negative results. The quarterly moving average remained stable (0.0%). Compared to August 2024, retail sales volume changed 0.4%, the fifth consecutive positive rate. For the year, retail sales accumulated growth of 1.6%. The 12-month cumulative growth was 2.2%.

In extended retail, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and accessories, construction materials, and wholesale of food, beverages, and tobacco products, the volume of sales grew 0.9% in August compared to July. The moving average showed a decrease of 0.3%. Compared to August 2024, there was a decrease of 2.1%. Year-to-date, extended retail sales are down 0.4%. The 12-month average was 0.7%.

There was a predominance of positive rates from July to August 2025, in the seasonally adjusted series, in retail trade activities. Positive rates were recorded in 5 of the 8 sectors: Office, computer, and communication equipment and material (4.9%), Textiles, apparel and footwear (1.0%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (0.7%), Furniture and household appliances (0.4%), and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages, and tobacco (0.4%).

Negative rates were recorded in Books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (-2.1%), Fuels and lubricants (-0.6%), and Other personal and household articles (-0.5%).

In extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts, and pieces increased by 2.3%, while Construction materials decreased by 0.1%. Wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco products is not disclosed in this comparison because there are not enough months to be subject to seasonal adjustment modeling.

Six of the eight activities posted positive results compared to August 2024

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the 0.4% positive change in retail was seen in six of the eight activities: Furniture and household appliances (2.7%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, and perfumery articles (2.3%), Other personal and household articles (2.1%), Textiles, apparel and footwear (0.7%), Books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (0.5%), and Fuels and lubricants (0.4%). The two activities that declined in this comparison were Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages, and tobacco (-0.5%) and Office, computer, and communication equipment and material (-0.7%).

In extended retail, the three additional activities declined: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts, and accessories (-7.7%), Construction materials (-6.1%), and Wholesale specialized in food products, beverages, and tobacco (-1.9%).

The Furniture and Appliances sector grew 2.7% in sales compared to August 2024, the second consecutive increase (in June 2025, it was -0.4%). This activity contributed the most to the year-over-year indicator, tied with two others and adding 0.2 percentage points to the retail total of 0.4%. Year-to-date sales, rising from 3.9% through July to 3.8% in the reference month, show continued growth. The 12-month cumulative sales growth is 4.1%.

Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, and perfumery products continue to grow compared to August 2024 (2.3%). This represents thirty months of growth (the last month to register a decline was February 2024: -0.5%). In the overall composition of the year-over-year rate, the sector was the largest influencer, with the same value as two other activities, accounting for 0.2 percentage points of the retail sector's 0.4%. The year-to-date growth was 3.3%, and over the last twelve months, 4.3%.

Other personal and household articles, which includes department stores, optical stores, jewelry stores, sporting goods stores, toy stores, etc., increased 2.1% compared to August 2024, completing five consecutive months of positive results (the last month to show a decline was March 2025: -6.2%). The sector also contributed the most to the overall retail growth rate, with 0.2 percentage points of the 0.4% total. The year-to-date growth was 2.1%, and over the last twelve months, 3.7%.

The Textiles, apparel, and footwear sector increased 0.7% in August 2025 compared to August 2024, reversing a 1.4% decline in July (the only decline of the year). This brings the sector's cumulative gains to 3.9%, the lowest level since March, when they recorded 3.8%. Over the past twelve months, the sector recorded decreasing gains: 5.5% up to June, 4.9% up to July, and 4.5% up to August.

Books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery sales increased 0.5% compared to August 2024, the second consecutive increase. Year-to-date sales through August are -1.7%, and over the past twelve months, they are -3.8%, the lowest negative figure in this comparison since November 2023 (-3.7%).

Fuels and lubricants sales increased by 0.4% compared to August 2024, the second consecutive positive result (-1.1% in June and 3.1% in July). Year-to-date, the sector accumulated gains of 0.7% up to August. The cumulative results for the last twelve months also show gains, starting in July: -0.8% up to May, -0.5% up to June, 0.1% up to July, and 0.6% up to August.

Among the negative results, Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco showed a 0.5% drop in sales compared to August 2024. This is the only negative influence among the eight collected, adding -0.3 percentage points to the total of 0.4% in this comparison. For the year, the outlook is for decreasing gains: 2.0% up to April, 1.7% up to May, 1.4% up to June, 1.2% up to July, and 1.0% up to August. The cumulative growth over the last twelve months went from 3.4% up to April to 1.5% up to August 2025, the lowest rate observed in this comparison since February 2023 (1.5%).

For Office, computer and communication equipment and supplies, the year-over-year comparison showed a 0.7% decline in August 2025, the first consecutive negative point (-4.7% in July). The year-to-date figure was -1.3%, and over the last twelve months, it was -1.3%.

In extended retail, compared to 2024, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories completed three consecutive months of decline, with -7.7%. This sector had the greatest influence on the overall composition of the rate, adding -1.4 percentage points to the total -2.1% for extended retail. Year-to-date (-2.9%), the sector extends the losses that began to be observed in the last two months (-0.8% in June and -2.2% in July). The cumulative sales volume over the last twelve months was 1.1%, the lowest rate since June 2023 (0.6%).

Construction materials saw a 6.1% drop in the volume of sales compared to August 2024, the third consecutive decline (-3.8% in June and -2.7% in July). The sector was the second in cotribution to the extended retail: -0.5 percentage points of the -2.1% result. The year-to-date figure was 0.7%, and over the last twelve months, it was 2.8%.

Wholesale specialized in food, beverage, and tobacco products saw a year-over-year decline for the thirteenth consecutive month, registering -1.9% in August 2025. In August, the sector exerted the third-largest negative influence among all eleven extended retail sectors, contributing -0.3 percentage points of the total (-2.1%). As a result, the year-to-date figure shows losses of 6.0%, with declines across all months of 2025. The indicator for the last twelve months also shows losses: -6.9% up to August.

Retail trade sees positive growth in 16 of the 27 Federation Units

From July to August 2025, in the seasonally adjusted series, retail sales posted positive results in 16 of the 27 Federation Units, notably Rio Grande do Norte (2.6%), Maranhão (2.5%), and Paraíba (1.9%). With negative resuls are 11 of the 27 Federation Units, notably Amapá (-4.3%), Rondônia (-1.5%), and Espírito Santo. (-1.2%).

In extended retail trade, the change between July and August 2025 showed positive results in 13 of the 27 Federation Units, notably Goiás (4.8%), Maranhão (2.3%), and Rio Grande do Norte (2.2%). With negative results are 13 of the 27 Federation Units, notably Amapá (-4.8%), Rondônia (-2.9%), and Amazonas (-2.5%).

Compared to August 2024, retail trade showed positive results in 16 of the 27 Federation Units, notably Rio Grande do Norte (7.3%), Maranhão (4.3%), and Paraíba (4.0%). With negative results, there were 11 rates, notably Tocantins (-9.2%), Piauí (-4.2%), and Roraima (-2.1%).

In extended retail, the change in sales volume was -2.1% with negative results in 16 of the 27 Federation Units, with highlights for: Piauí (-5.3%), São Paulo (-4.3%) and Minas Gerais (-3.8%). On the positive side, there are 11 regional results, with highlights for Mato Grosso (6.1%), Acre (3.2%) and Maranhão (2.9%).
