The available storage capacity in Brazil was 227.1 million tonnes in the second semester of 2024, 2.1% above the previous semester. The number of establishments (9,511) rose 0.9% in relation to the first semester of 2024.

Rio Grande do Sul had the highest number of storage establishments (2,448) and Mato Grosso had the largest capacity: 61.4 million tonnes.

In the second semester of 2024, the North (7.5%), Northeast (3.6%) and Central-West (1.2%) regions increased the number of their establishments. The South Region maintained the number of establishments unchanged, whereas the Southeast dropped 0.4%.

The stock of agricultural products added up to 36.0 million tonnes, a reduction of 19.3% over that of 44.6 million tonnes on December 31, 2023, reflecting the weather problems that influenced the development of the 2024 harvest.

Concerning the stocks of the five major agricultural products existing in the storage facilities, the stock of corn represented the largest volume (17.7 million tonnes), followed by the stocks of soybeans (7.3 million), wheat (5.7 million), rice (1.7 million) and coffee (0.9 million). Those products comprise 92.4% of the total stocked among the products monitored by this survey.

Silo capacity reaches 120.5 million tonnes, a rise of 2.6%

Number of establishments and storage capacity, by type, according to the Federation Unit - Brazil - H2 2024

They were followed by automated and bulk warehouses, which hit 82.6 million tonnes of storage capacity, 2.1% larger than that reported in the previous period. This type of storage accounted for 36.4% of the total storage in Brazil.

Automated and bulk warehouses appeared more in the Central-West, with 50.5% of the storage capacity of the region. That region accounted for 59.7% of the total capacity of that type of storage in Brazil. This aspect is understandable, since the region has large properties and agribusiness groups, which produce a large amount of grain, making that type of storage more feasible.

Conventional, temporary and inflatable warehouses prevailed in the South Region (34.8%), followed by the Southeast Region (31.7%). These regions are major producers of rice and coffee, respectively, products that are stored in sacks and that use this type of warehouse.
