IPCA-15 is 0.43% in April

The Extended National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15) rose 0.43% in April, 0.21 percentage points (p.p.) below the rate of March (0.64%). In the year, the IPCA-15 accumulated a rise of 2.43%, above the rate of 5.26% relative to the 12 immediately previous months. In April 2024, the IPCA-15 had been 0.21%.

Of the nine groups of products and services surveyed, only Transportation (-0.44%) dropped in April. The other groups that stood out were Food and beverages, with the highest change (1.14%) and biggest impact (0.25 p.p.), followed by Health and personal care (0.96% and 0.13 p.p.). Together, the two groups accounted for 88% of the month's index The other changes ranged between 0.06%, in Education and 0.76% in Wearing apparel.

In the group of Food and beverages (1.14%), food at home accelerated from 1.25% in March to 1.29% in April. The rises in tomatoes (32.67%), ground coffee (6.73%) and long-life milk (2.44%) contributed to that result.

Food away from home (0.77%) accelerated in relation to March (0.66%), due to the rise in snacks (1.23%) and meals (0.50%), which had registered rise of 0.68% and 0.62% in March, respectively.

In Health and personal care (0.96%), the result was influenced by items personal hygiene (1.51%), pharmaceuticals (1.04%), after the authorization of the adjustment up to 5.09% in the prices of medicines since March 31, and health insurance plans (0.57%).

In the group of Transportation (-0.44%), airfare (-14.38%) and fuels (-0.38%), with a negative change in the prices of ethanol (0.95%), vehicular gas (0.71%), diesel fuel (0.64%) and gasoline (0.29%), contributed to the drop.

Still in Transportation, inter-city bus (0.39%) was adjusted in Rio de Janeiro (5.62%) since March 29. In addition to the adjustment of 5.33% in the fare in Rio de Janeiro (0.53%), the result of subway (-0.95%) took into account the zero fare on Sundays and holidays in Brasília (-14.36%), in force since March 1st.

Taxi also rose (0.57%), due to the average adjustment of 10.91% in Porto Alegre (5.84%) on March 31, and urban bus dropped (0.51%), due to the zero fare on Sundays and holidays in Brasília (-14.36%) in force since March 1st; to the adjustment of 4.17% in Porto Alegre (2.29%) on March 31; and to the adjustment of 15.00% in the fare in Belém (0.50%) on April 14, also including free fare on Sundays and holidays.

In the group of Housing, which decelerated from 0.37% in March to 0.09% in April, the result of residential electricity was -0.09%, against 0.43% in March, and water and sewage fees (0.12%) took into account the adjustment of 4.17% in Goiânia (2.09%), in force since April 1st.

In regional terms, the highest change was recorded in Porto Alegre (0.88%), due to the rise in tomatoes (61.16%) and gasoline (2.25%). In contrast, the lowest result occurred in Goiânia (-0.13%), which showed a drop in the prices of ethanol (7.60%) and gasoline (3.70%).

In order to estimate the IPCA-15, the prices collected from March 18 to April 14, 2025 (reference) were compared with the ones in force from February 13 to March 17, 2025 (base).

The indicator refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 40 minimum wages and it encompasses the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Curitiba, besides Brasília and the municipality of Goiânia. The methodology is the same as the one used for the IPCA; the difference lies in the period of price collection and in the geographic coverage.
