The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) launched, on Thursday (26), the Women in the 2022 Census Overview – Population and Census Results. Although other publications on the Census provide data by sex, the such information is distributed across different topics.
The Overview gathers, in a single space, the most representative indicators on the situation of women as for the aspects surveyed by the Census, and provides a cross-cutting, integrated view of gender-related inequalities. The organization of data aims to facilitate access to information by society and serves as a basis for analysis, surevys and evidence-based surveys. This initiative is one among efforts made during previous Censuses, with the release of the National System of Gender Indicators 2014 (SNIG) the Triennial Report of the Division of population and Social Indicators, “Gender Statistics - Social indicators on women in Brazil” (2017, 2021 and 2024).

An event to launch the product
To launch this new product, in the afternoon, the IBGE will make a presentation and soon after, conduct workshops on the use of the IBGE System of Automatic Retrieval (SIDRA) and of the Overview itself. the event was hybrid with activities carried out at the branches of Casa Brasil Rio de Janeiro, IBGE Fundaj – Recife, COP - Belém, Ipece- Ceará.
The president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann opened the event, and thanked the team in charge of the study; he emphasized the tradition of the IBGE in statistical surveys how it is possible to use data in segments that seemed somehow invisible to the population overall.
Following the president's speech, Daléa Antunes, coordinator of the IBGE Technical Committee for Social Relations of Gender and Sexualities, spoke about the importance of having a specific overview of women in Brazil: “on many occasions, the specialist engaged in a given topic does not realize how important it is to have information disaggregated by sex. The overview is a very intuitive and friendly platform, so, when the user searches Census dats they will find, among the topics available, the topic of women, which will help us understant the data from this perspective.” She also mentioned that the site has previously unseen tables, with combinations based on microdata, up to municipal level.
Barbara Cobo, deputy coordinator of the Committee, explained that the IBGE has produced important material on gender, including not only data, but the entire statistical operation and its related processes.
Nina Yano, from the IBGE State Superintendency in São Paulo, spoke about the challenges of the census operation and of data collection, with considerations about the perspective of gender violence in the work environment. Regarding the work of women in data collection, the IBGE has additional challenges to face as an institution: in the last Census, we observed a significant increase in the report of harassment occurrences taking place in the field.
The data presented were subdivided into topics: education, labor market and income, travel and mobility, family arrangements and disability. Each topic was presented by one of the specialists representing the committee.
The event was then opened for discussion, with the participation of attendees from other states online, including all the other branches of Casa Brasil-IBGE: Fundaj – Recife, COP – Belém e Ipece- Ceará.
In the last part of the discussion, Ana Paula Arguelles, from the State Secretariat for Women in Rio de janeiro; Betina Barbosa, from Pnud; and Andréa Lorena, from UN Women, spoke about the gender agendas in Brazil and abroad.
